The West Somerset Railway (WSR) is a 22.75-mile (36.6 km) heritage railway line in Somerset. The line originally opened in 1862 between Taunton and Watchet. In 1874 it was extended from Watchet to Minehead by the Minehead Railway. The line was closed by British Rail in 1971 and reopened in 1976 as a heritage line. It is the longest standard gauge independent heritage railway in the UK.
Flying Scotsman was originally built in Doncaster for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), emerging from the works on 24 Feb 1923 and initially numbered 1472. It was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley as part of the A1 class, the most powerful locomotives used by the railway. The legendary locomotive also performed the first non-stop London to Edinburgh trip in 1928, cutting the journey time to eight hours. In 1934, Flying Scotsman  was clocked at 100mph on a test run, the first locomotive in the UK to reach that speed. The engine underwent a £4.2M restoration to put it back on the tracks as a working engine from 2015 to 2023, when it celebrated its centenary with a nationwide tour, and is visiting West Somerset Railway only in June and July 2025.
