From the Blackmore Vale area we take you directly to Mottisfont which is a house and gallery set in riverside gardens near Romsey.  Eight centuries of history are buried within Mottisfont’s walls.  An Augustinian priory was founded there in 1201, laying the foundations for the 18th century structure that is now visible.  The house pays homage to its last owners, the Russell family, who made it their weekend retreat in the 1930s.  Maud Russell was a society hostess and patron of the arts and she shaped the house as you see it today.  She commissioned Rex Whistler to create an extraordinary drawing room, full of illusions and there are hints of medieval history there too.

The gardens are particularly famous for the National Collection of old fashioned roses but there is also an innovative Kitchen Garden, carpets of spring bulbs, rich autumn foliage and a colourful, scented winter garden so something for every season.  You can explore the gardens at your own pace or try one of the free daily guided walks and talks
